Bread lovers, rejoice — Flora & Fauna now accepts bread tags through our Recycle & Save Program!
Plus, we're so excited to be an official collection point for Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs. It’s a wonderful organisation that recycles bread tags to raise money to buy wheelchairs for disadvantaged people in South Africa.
If you’d like to support an amazing cause, cut down on your plastic waste, and receive a $10 Flora & Fauna store credit — please send your bread tags to us!
Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs
In 2006, Mary Honeybun started Bread Tags For Wheelchairs in South Africa. As a retired nurse, Mary still wanted to help people — she was also aware that many people in South Africa who needed wheelchairs simply couldn’t afford them. She came up with the idea of collecting plastics to sell to a plastic moulding company. As the initiative grew, many people called for a national collection network here in Australia.
Now, there are over 500 collection points spread across every state and territory, with around 200kg of bread tags being recycled every month! Recycling 250kg of bread tags funds an entry-level wheelchair, although some cost more depending on the client’s needs. Amazingly, the entire Bread Tags For Wheelchairs organisation has funded over 800 wheelchairs for disadvantaged people all across South Africa!
What Can I Send To F&F?
- Plastic makeup and skincare containers - palettes, mascara and lip gloss tubes, and spray nozzles / pump mechanisms.
- Toiletries - empty toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner bottles, razor handles, floss containers and anything else packaged in plastic that's clean and free of residue.
- Miscellaneous items - empty blister packs (including Webster packs, excluding cytotoxic medication packs), Pela phone cases, Dirt Laundry pouches, clean hosiery, silicone products that we sell (excluding menstrual cups) and now bread tags!
We do not accept non-plastic waste, menstrual cups, cloth pads or nappies, blades/cartridges, bamboo toothbrushes or actual dental floss, glass, soft plastic packaging, used face sheet masks, paper, cardboard, tin/aluminium or commerical recycling.
Recycle & Save | How Do I Recycle With F&F?
Step 1: Keep your Flora & Fauna box (or a shoe box) and start filling it up with empty beauty tubes and containers. Make sure your containers are free of any residual product or water. If you're sending hosiery, Pela cases, blister packs, or Dirt pouches, put them in the same box and we'll seperate them.
Step 2: Once your box is full, write your name and email address on a piece of paper and put it in the box. Tape your box up and send it to: Flora & Fauna Recycling Program, Unit 4, 25 Loyalty Road, North Rocks, NSW 2151
Step 3: Once received and processed, we will add 200 reward points to your account ($10 credit) and send email confirmation!
Why Should I Recycle With F&F?
You may have heard of the term “wishcycling”. It’s when we pop something in our recycle bin in the hope that it will be recycled. We’re all guilty of this! The problem is that a few incorrect items in your recycling bin can contimate a whole truckload of recyclables.
With Flora & Fauna’s Recycle & Save Program, be assured that your odd bits and bobs will be recycled properly through Terracycle! We are firm believers of a closed-loop system. By this, we mean that all products (and their packaging) can be reused, repurposed, recycled or composted — instead of ending up in landfill.
By sending us your plastic beauty packaging and other items, you’re actively participating in creating a better planet! Your contribution will allow TerraCycle to melt and mould plastics into new products.
