A Guide to Eco Cleaning Products

Jan 12, 2019by Jacqui - F&F

Cleaning products are household essentials, but have you ever thought of the impact they’re having on the environment? Traditional cleaning products from the supermarket are known to contain harsh chemicals which can affect the planet and our health.

If you’re looking to switch over to a more eco-friendly way of living, cleaning products are a great place to start.

Before we dive in, we want to let you know that making the switch is a lot easier than you may think. With a little research (which we’ve helped you out with below), you can be on your way to a greener household.

With toxic chemical based cleaners you’re often told to wear protective gear as the fumes can have negative impacts on your health and skin. Research has even shown that regular use of these products is comparable to smoking 20 cigarettes a day over a 10-20 year period! Additionally, as they are generally washed down the drain or flushed down toilet after use, they then end up in our waterways and ingested by our marine life.

Jessica Bragdon, Founder of one of our amazing eco-friendly cleaning brands, Koala Eco, recently discussed the benefits of using plant-derived cleaning products over chemical based in the Huffington Post. Many natural cleaning products contain essential oils, a well-known, effective antibacterial alternative to chemical products. Bragdon also explains that “along with essential oils, natural cleaning products contain safer ingredients such as vinegar, sugar-based biodegradable alcohol and bicarbonate soda”.

Our mission here at F&F is to offer everyone better choices and protect our amazing planet and that’s why we’re passionate about providing our customers with vital information that allows you to make informed decisions. With that being said, we’re thrilled to stock some amazing eco-friendly cleaning products to help your transition to eco-friendly cleaning products a little bit easier. Our products range from biodegradable garbage bags to biodegradable dish clothsmulti-purpose cleaners and bathroom cleaners, just to name a few. We’re also proud to work some amazing eco brands including ecostoreKoala EcoResparkleRetro KitchenGreen Addict & BioBag.

If you’re ready to ditch the chemicals but not sure where to start, read on as we discuss our favourite eco-friendly cleaning products for the bathroom, kitchen and laundry.

The Bathroom

We have some brilliant cleaning products for the bathroom here at F&F. The ecostore Bathroom and Shower Cleaner cuts through dirt and soap scum for a sparkling finish & is ideal for shower screens, tiles, porcelain, chrome, glass, sinks and baths. The Multi Purpose Bathroom Cleaner by Koala Eco is also a great plant-based cleaner that contains no phosphates, ammonia, chlorine or synthetic chemicals. It has a lovely eucalyptus scent and you can purchase their larger refill sizes from us, too. Green Addict's Bowlderise Toilet Cleaner is perfect for toilets and no problem for those with septic tanks.

The Kitchen

For the Kitchen, we love the ecostore Dishwashing Tablets. They’re fragrance free, come in a pack of 30 tablets and have plant based packaging that dissolves in the dishwasher. Another kitchen essential is our Biodegradable Kitchen Dish Cloths. We have over 25 different cute designs to choose from and were the number 1 best seller at F&F in 2018. They last between 6-9 months and at the end of their life, simply pop them in the composter to break down. Another fantastic item for the kitchen is the Urban Composter, allowing those living in apartments or with smaller backyards the opportunity to compost their waste. The Resparkle All-Purpose Cleaning Kit is a great multi purpose surface cleaner and includes a multi-purpose spray, microfibre cloth and copper scrubber. We love Resparkle because they have designed a refillable option to reduce plastic waste by offering refillable cleaning pods. We also have a great range of biodegradable cleaning brushes available online, too.

Eco Laundry

If you’re looking for a more natural alternative to doing your laundry, Soapberries from That Red House are a great option. Soapberries are the fruit of the Sapindus Mukorossi tree and are a natural soap that effectively cleans and removes stains. The Laundry Soaker & Stain Remover from ecostore is also wonderful for removing those hard-to-remove stains from clothing. It’s suitable for sensitive skin and the bottle is made from sugar cane plastic; a 100% recyclable material.

We’ve recently introduced the Cora Ball and White Magic to F&F. These products are designed to remove microplastics and microfibres from your clothing and subsequently keep them out of our oceans. These products are used in the washing machine to help reduce these particles in your clothing. The particles found in microplastics have been found to cause physical and chemical impacts in our food chain and has therefore resulted in starvation and reproductive issues in different species. They have also been found in marine species which are then consumed by humans, with the extent of the effects still unknown.

You can view our entire range of eco-friendly cleaning products online now at F&F.
