Why Should We Use Essential Oils For Cleaning?

So, why should we try out DIY cleaning recipes using essential oils? Well, for starters — conventional cleaning products can cause sudden adverse reactions like skin and eye irritation, coughing, breathing problems, and headaches, as well as potential long-term issues relating to the lungs and hormones. That’s why we love the idea of all-natural, DIY cleaning products — harnessing the natural powers of essential oils!

Before we jump into some incredibly simple DIY cleaning recipes, we want to shine a spotlight on Eco Modern Essentials’ DIY Cleaning KitThis nifty kit contains 6 essential oils that are a must-have for DIY cleaning recipes: Blue Mallee Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Tea Tree, Peppermint, Lemon, and Sweet Orange! These common essential oils — paired with simple, basic ingredients — provide you with everything you need to clean your entire home!

DIY Essential Oil All-Purpose Kitchen Cleaner

First up is an all-purpose cleaning spray to use in your kitchen! This recipe — created by Eco Modern Essentials — harnesses the natural cleaning abilities of four essential oils.

Many of these all-purpose kitchen spray recipes contain three extra ingredients and items that you’ll need, which are white vinegar, distilled water, and a glass spray bottle. That’s it! Distilled water is used to make sure there’s no impurities in your cleaning products, and white vinegar is used to dissolve dirt, grease and grime. Glass spray bottles are reusable, recyclable, and won’t absorb any essential oil residue.

To make the all-purpose kitchen cleaning spray, simply add equal parts vinegar and distilled water to your spray bottle, 20 drops each of your Lemon, Lemongrass and Eucalyptus Essential Oils, and 10 drops Peppermint. Shake and spray!

DIY Essential Oil Bathroom & Shower Cleaner

Dealing with a build-up of dried soap scum in your bathroom and shower? It’s super annoying to deal with, but luckily, we can use the natural cleaning abilities of Lemon and Tea Tree to cut through stubborn soap scum! Lemon cuts through soapy residue with ease, and Tea Tree has incredible antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties.

This DIY bathroom and shower spray doubles as a soap scum remover, so it can be used for everyday upkeep and all-day, spring cleaning sessions! This DIY recipe incorporates baking soda, which helps to dissolve dirt and grease.

In a 100ml spray bottle, add equal parts distilled water and white vinegar. Add 10 drops of your Tea Tree Essential Oil and 5 drops of your Lemon Essential Oil. Add 1 tsp of baking soda, screw on the lid, and shake gently.

DIY Essential Oil Laundry Products

Essential oils can be a super helpful tool in the laundry! Whether you’re washing your clothes or drying them — essential oils can help to eliminate bacteria and oil-based stains, freshen up your whites, and provide a gorgeous scent.

To freshen up your whites, we recommend leaving your garments in a tub of water, lemon juice and Lemon Essential Oil overnight before washing. To dissolve yucky oil-based stains, grab your Eucalyptus Essential Oil and apply directly to the stain. Allow it to dry completely before washing as usual.

Fabric softener is another fantastic product to make yourself! Conventional fabric softeners are typically packed with synthetic fragrances, so to make a natural alternative, simply mix 4 cups of white vinegar with 10-15 drops of your favourite essential oil. Enjoy your soft, all-natural smelling clothes!

There are so many different ways to harness the natural abilities of essential oils in our cleaning products! We love that aside from a few easy-to-find ingredients (like vinegar), it’s incredibly easy to make your own natural all-purpose sprays, soap scum removers, and fabric softeners — especially with Eco Modern Essentials’ DIY Cleaning Kit!
