F&F Recycling Program
We are delighted to introduce a recycling programme at Flora & Fauna. We have partnered with TerraCycle to bring you a program we hope you'll love and it's very simple.
Up to now it's been hard to recycle things like beauty tubes, bottles, make up packaging etc. and they often find their way into landfill. As a responsible retailer we don't like this one bit and we had to find a solution. So now any beauty products bought at Flora & Fauna can be returned to us and we will collate them, separate them and get them to TerraCycle to be recycled. Plus in exchange for returning your bottles and packaging to us we will credit your Flora & Fauna account for being planet friendly and helping our environment. You will earn $10 of F&F credit for any box of recycling received.
What does TerraCycle do?
TerraCycle helps to eliminate waste by recycling the non-recyclable. Terracycle can collect, and recycle, almost any form of waste. So whether that is coffee pods, beauty tubes, juice packets and even chip bags, Terracycle make new products out of the waste. With beauty products they melt the plastic and remould it into new recycled products such as bench seats, chairs and tables.
Terracycle was started in the US in 2001 and it now has many locations all round the world dedicated to minimising waste heading to landfill. Their team has even made the world's first pen made from used pens.
What do I need to do?
Step 1: Keep your Flora & Fauna box (or another box) and start filling it up with empty tubes and containers of beauty products. If your local council has a recycling program recycle what you can there; use us for things that can't be recycled there. Make sure your containers are clean and free of any residual product or water. We only want to recycle the plastic, not any left over moisturiser :-)
Step 2: Write your name and email address on a piece of paper and put in the box. Tape your box up, head to the post office, and send to the following address:
Flora & Fauna Recycling Program
Unit 4, 25 Loyalty Road
Step 3: Once we receive your box and separate out the contents we will add $10 credit to your account and send you an email to confirm this. Please note it is a requirement that your tubes are clean and free of residual contents in order to receive the credit. If you don't have an account we will create one for you so please do include your email address.
Step 4: When we have received enough plastic to recycle we will send to TerraCycle for recycling.
E-waste, eg mobile phones and batteries are a huge issue in Australia. There are 25 million unused mobile phones in Australia and only around 10% of those will get recycled. Also we only recycle 3% of batteries compared to Switzerland that recycles 72%, a lot of that is due to Government legislation. Sadly we are lacking here in Australia.
There are options to recycle both of these in Australia but you might not know about them. You can recycle your mobile phone at your local Telstra, Optus and Vodafone stores. Batteries can be recycled with TerraCycle or at your local Aldi. We feel very strongly about how so few are recycled and many of you are just not near stores to do this but we are and we work with TerraCycle. We can get them recycled so, when you are sending your beauty products to us, throw your mobile phones in and any household batteries (not lithium) and we will get them recycled.
- Please make sure your phone is turned off and free of data
- Don't send lithium batteries on their own
- Only send household batteries
- Only send via standard post (road)
- Please recycle locally if you can
What can I send? If we sell it you can send the packaging back to us. It includes beauty products, home and health products and vegan bags. BUT if your council has a recycling program please recycle what you can in that program first and only send us what can't be recycled there. We also will now take phones and batteries - see above.
Can I send you product packaging that I haven't bought from you? Our main aim is to reduce waste so yes but only beauty products. We can't recycle other products than that. If you send us other things that can't be recycled that haven't been bought at F&F (e.g. chip packets or drink cans) we won't be able to credit you. If unsure get in touch with us.
How should I send it? Pack it all in your Flora & Fauna box, or any other boxes you have handy. Remember to make sure your tubes and bottles are free of residual product and clean. Remember to include your name and email address.
Any tips on cleaning the tubes?
We need the tubes and bottles squeaky clean so an easy way to clean them is to cut them in two. Cut the tubes, throw them in a bucket and put the bucket in the shower with you; that way you're reusing water to clean them rather than fresh tap water.
Do I have to pay delivery? Yes, but we credit you $10 to spend at Flora & Fauna when we receive your parcel. To be sure it gets here we recomend sending tracked delivery as we can't credit you for any parcels that go missing.
Can I drop off my box to you? Absolutely, we'd love to say hello. Feel free to grab all your friends' recycling and drop it off and have a browse around our showroom.
How do I make sure I get my Credit? Three key things.
- Include your name and email address
- Make sure you send us product we can recycle
- Send your packaging without any residual product.
Tick those and you'll get the credit. If you leave product in the package we have to deal with it so you don't get your credit. So help us to help you is the key here.
When will you credit me? We will credit you within a week of us receiving your box.
I don't have an account, what do I do? You can set one up easily for yourself by looking in the top right hand corner of your screen. Equally just include your name and email and when we receive your box we'll set up an account for you.
