Jul 29, 2021by Olivia - F&F

We know that being in lockdown is extremely tough. It’s changed our lives in more ways than we can imagine, but for some of us, being in and out of lockdown has given us the time and space to try out new creative hobbies.

Learning a new skill can boost your self-confidence and self-esteem, plus, it can help you to find purpose, connect with others (even virtually), and inject a bit of joy into your day!

We All Need A Creative Outlet During Lockdown

We all need a non-verbal, creative outlet where we can unleash our innermost thoughts and feelings. A creative hobby allows us the time to escape from our news apps, social media accounts, and the constant ‘ping’ from our notifications.

Crucially, during the pandemic, we’ve been glued to our phones and TV’s; patiently awaiting the daily case numbers, the press conference details, and the updates on restrictions. In the past year and a half, we’ve seen every state and territory in Australia enter and exit from lockdown.

It’s exhausting — but we need to remember that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Above all, we need to find creative ways to relax, express emotion, unleash frustration, and find joy in this emotionally exhausting time!

Build A Beautiful Terrarium!

We know that daily exposure to nature is good for our mental health — so why not bring elements of nature into your indoor space? Typically, glass terrariums are filled with gravel, moss, soil, plants, and decorative elements. They’re a living ecosystem, but they require very little maintenance due to their self-watering abilities.

Haylee Magendans (The Plant Whisperer!) offers an online DIY Terrarium Making At Home class via Class Bento. In Haylee’s class, you’ll learn about soil layering and composition, how to pick the right plants for your environment, and how to care for your terrarium. The best part is, you’ll receive a Craft Kit full of everything you need to create your terrarium from scratch!

Grab Your Pencils & Paintbrushes!

Do you remember painting as a kid? It was messy, fun, and the end result rarely looked good — but it didn’t matter! If you haven’t picked up a paintbrush or a colouring pencil since you were a kid, there’s absolutely no better time than now.

If you’re looking for a reasonably quick and inexpensive way to unleash your creative skills, we recommended adult colouring books! Colouring in, is super-duper simple and relaxing.

Don’t have any art supplies? No worries! ClassBento has a tonne of affordable online art classes for beginners. When you sign up, you’ll receive a Craft Kit with everything you need to follow along. This allows you to experiment with watercolours, acrylic paints and oil paints with guidance from an expert. If you have kiddies we have Animal Colouring Books, Eco Crayons and Paint, so they stay entertained too.

Bake Some Delicious Vegan Goodies!

Cooking, especially baking, is a fantastic creative outlet and stress-relieving hobby! Plus, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labour — so it’s really a win-win. The methodical process of baking can be meditative, and there’s really no greater joy than feeding friends and family.

If you’re alone during lockdown (which we know is tough), why not spend an afternoon baking some vegan goodies for a loved one? Depending on your lockdown restrictions, you can drop off the baked goodies at their door, or send them via the post.

Here at Flora & Fauna, we have lots of Vegan Baking goods for you to try out — including the wonderful new Superfood Protein Ball Mix, Pancake Mix, Bread Mix and Banana Bread Mix from Mt. Elephant! Plus, don’t forget that we have a tonne of quick and easy Vegan Recipes on our blog — like the delicious Vegan Sticky Date Mug Cake!

So, will you try out any of these creative hobbies? You don’t have to become an expert overnight, and it doesn’t matter if you “suck” at first — all that matters is that you enjoy yourself and practice over time!
