Using Oils for Oily Skin

Apr 05, 2019by Olivia - F&F

Oils can be used with any skin type – even acne prone and oily skin. Many of us struggle with oily skin and acne; In fact, 85% of people between the ages of 12 to 24 experience it.

There are many reasons why oily skin occurs. Genetics, hormones, and even the weather can play a part in the condition of your skin. We typically reach for harsh cleansers and toners to reduce the oiliness. Using facial oils on oily skin will make it even oilier, right? Actually, no. Surprisingly, depriving your skin of moisture makes it produce more oil to compensate.

So what oils are best for oily skin?

At Flora & Fauna, we’re incredibly passionate about natural skincare and sourcing the best quality vegan and cruelty-free products for you to try. We stock a large number of natural serums and oils from leading brands such as Antipodes, Mukti, Happy Skincare, Botani, Acure, Madara and Black Chicken Remedies. But with so many oils out there on the market - rosehip, jojoba, argan, avocado, primrose, hempseed – it can get pretty confusing!

Here are some of our faves:

Happy Skincare Active Jojoba Facial Oil – For oily skin, nothing is better than Jojoba oil. Its small molecular structure means that it quickly penetrates the top layer of the skin, essentially providing a light layer of moisture with a non-greasy feel. It’s perfect for problematic, sensitive and aging skin. This Happy Skincare Jojoba Oil is full of Vitamin A, D and E, as well as Black Seed Oil (stimulates healthy collagen production) and Camelia Oil (rich in fatty acids).

Acure the Essentials Argan Oil – Argan oil is a miracle worker for oily skin. It naturally balances sebum production and can prevent further breakouts. This particular one by Acure is incredibly rich in Vitamin E, Essential Fatty Acids and Proteins; combined, they work together to minimise scars and restore skin elasticity.

Skin by Ecostore Multi-Nutrient Facial Oil – A light, replenishing oil packed with jojoba, apricot and avocado oils to balance the complexion. Many users have said it’s the best facial oil they’ve ever used on their skin. Give it a try!

Eco By Sonya Glory Oil – A non-greasy, soothing oil made with Inca Inchi (healing and anti-aging properties), Acai Fruit Oil (protects from pollutants) and Pumpkin Seed Oil (rich in fatty acids and antioxidants). Perfect for sensitive and acne-prone skin. Can be used day and night.

How do I use facial oils?

When incorporating oils into your skincare regime, remember that they always go last. It’s also beneficial to use a light, water-based moisturiser before your facial oil of choice. In doing so, it’ll help your skin to maintain its healthy balance of 70% water and 30% oil.

  • Start by washing and gently exfoliating the skin. Remember to remove all traces of makeup.
  • Apply a light moisturiser to the skin and let it sink in.
  • Apply a few drops of your facial oil to your skin. Massage using a sweeping upward motion, then finally tap it in using the pads of your fingers.

If a particular oil isn’t working for you, make sure:

  • It’s not too heavy for your skin. Look for oils that easily absorb into the skin, like Jojoba.
  • You don’t apply it too often. Apply your face oil last thing before you go to bed. Your skin produces less sebum at night, so applying oil in the morning may not be such a good idea.

So, as you can see, for oily and acne-prone skin facial oils can work wonders! Shop our full range of oils.
