What is Veganuary?

Veganuary is a 31-day vegan challenge. For the month of January, participants from all around the world adopt a plant-based diet and spread the word about veganism. The broader goal of Veganuary is to help our planet, help our health, and support animal welfare.

When did it start?

Since 2014, the Veganuary movement has inspired and supported more than one million people in 192 countries to try vegan for January – and beyond. Plus, countless athletes, comedians, authors, film stars and politicians have endorsed Veganuary — Joaquin Phoenix, Paul McCartney, Alicia Silverstone and Evanna Lynch, just to name a few!

Here's some stats

In January of 2020, over 400,000 people signed up for Veganuary. In an analysis of the global impact of just 350,000 people signing up, researchers found that…

  • More than 1 million animals were saved
  • 2.5 million litres of water was saved (enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool!),
  • 41,200 tonnes of CO2EQ was saved (the equivalent of 450,000 flights from London to Berlin)!

What Can I Eat?

The aim of any healthy diet is to achieve a balance of complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fats.

We recommend trying a few different meat and dairy substitutes so that you can recreate your favourite meals. Think spaghetti bolognese, burgers, pizza, curries and ice cream — it can all be veganised! Try experimenting with tofu, lentils, mushrooms, chickpeas and black beans.

Know why you're taking the challenge!

Before your challenge begins, make a list of all the reasons why you want to go plant-based — whether it’s for the animals, for the environment, or for your health.

Experiment

Almost any meat or dairy-based meal can be veganised. Write a list of your favourite meals and see whether they can be veganised with faux meats, tofu, plant-based mylks and dairy-free cheese.

Find a friend!

Any sort of challenge is easier to complete with a friend by your side so can one of your friends or family members take the challenge with you? Feel free to post in the Flora & Fauna Family Facebook group to find other people taking up the Veganuary challenge.
