I think it's safe to say that we have all experienced our fair share of sugar cravings throughout our lives. When those sugar cravings strike, it's almost our instinct to reach out for things like chocolate, lollies, muffins, or in other terms highly refined, highly processed and sugary foods! These foods make us feel better for a while, but in the long run, they don't stop our cravings — they only make us crave them more!

Did you know that just seeing, smelling or thinking about sweet foods, is enough for us to start craving them? Pretty crazy right?

If you're like us and love your sweets, but struggle to fight off those cravings — let us first take you through what causes sugar cravings, followed by how you can manage them!

What Causes Sugar Cravings?

Our bodies are conditioned to want sugar the more we have it. Why? When we eat sugary foods, it stimulates our brains reward system — we might feel happier, or less stressed. It's because of this feeling, we end up in a craving cycle. So the next time we feel stressed or unhappy, we eat something sweet, feel better and the system repeats!

Nutrient deficiencies are also one to cause sugar cravings. If you are low in zinc, iron, calcium and magnesium in particular, make sure to grab some supplements to even out your levels and avoid cravings. Shop Vitus Wholefoods.

Have you ever heard of boredom eating? It means you're eating but you're not actually hungry. If this sounds like you, try keep your mind entertained. It could be something as simple as going for a walk.

Foods That Can Help Fight Sugar Cravings

It seems funny to solve your sugar cravings with more food, but you'll have to trust us on this. So what foods are good?

Fruit — contains natural sugars and good fibres, vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and phytochemicals. Some people worry about the sugar in fruit, but it contains all good nutrients that can help manage your sugar cravings.

High fibre foods — found in fruit, veggies and grains help you feel full, stabalising your blood sugar levels and helping to manage those cravings. Try to incorporate a high fibre food with every meal.

Protein Based Snacks — have the same effect as high fibre foods in that they stabilise your blood sugar levels and keep you feeling full, reducing your sugar cravings.

What Other Actions Can You Take?

Here are 4 tips that can help fight off those sugar cravings:

  1. Move your body — moving your body releases endorphins and helps increase your sertonin levels. This makes you feel happier and non-reliant on sugar to get that same happy feeling.
  2. Drink water — If you can sense a craving coming along, drink a big glass of water first. Dehydration can often be confused with sugar cravings.
  3. Don't skip meals — skipping meals affects your blood sugar levels. So it's important to keep them stable and the body fuelled with low GI food and snacks at every meal.
  4. Keep sweet treats out of the house — this helps avoid temptations and allows you to stay on track.

We hope you picked up some great tips, to fight off those sugar cravings!
