Flora & Fauna became a Certified B Corporation in 2017 being one of the first retailers in Australia to earn this accreditation. we were recertified in May 2021 and now have an industry leading score of 91 vs 87 from our first certification.
As a purpose-led business becoming a B Corp was the obvious step for us early on our F&F journey.
B Corps are a force for good - they are better corporations. They use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems and balance purpose and profit - the two go hand in hand. B Corps meet the highest social and environmental standards.
B Corp certification is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to skincare.
B Corp launched in 2006 and over 3000 global businesses are now Certified B Corps and members of this community. In Australia there are over 200 B Corps.
We knew who we were and our purpose before we'd even started Flora & Fauna; to us, Flora & Fauna is the vehicle to make a change - we are a platform for purpose. We are constantly improving what we do, so we are the best possible business we can be, and we lead the way as a retailer, encouraging others to make a change too.
Becoming a B Corp enables us to be part of a bigger community of businesses all with similar values and ethics. The ability to share information and work collectively will drive change faster. We frequently work with other businesses as an advocate for responsible retailing so this is a great way to drive 'Change for Good'. Becoming a B Corp also drives us to continue our journey; for us, this is the start of something great and a fantastic way to build a strategy so we can be the best we can possibly be and make as much positive impact as we can.
Flora & Fauna was certified by the non-profit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. We’ve evaluated how our practices and processes impact our employees, our community, the environment, and our customers. Getting certified is not an easy or quick process so we worked on it for around 6 months. We are absolutely dedicated to our mission so this was the absolute right thing to do. Re-Certification also happens every 3 years so this is very much a journey.
Today, there are over 3,000 Certified B Corps around the globe, including Sienna, Dr. Bronner's, Preserve, Kester Black, All Birds and Patagonia. In Australia, there are over 200 businesses including architects, banks, consumer products and plenty more. You can find out more about B Corp here.
July 2016 - We removed the use of plastic from our orders so our recycled boxes are sent plastic-free. We have saved over 30 tonnes of plastic with this one move.
October 2017 - Not satisfied with just being plastic-free we launched our minimal packaging option. We had a 40% opt-in straightaway.
June 2017 - We launched our partnership with TerraCycle to recycle plastic beauty packaging.
March 2018 - We changed our minimal packaging option to be standard. Over 95% of orders are now sent minimally - the others are generally gifts.
May 2019 - We removed the packing slip from parcels saving 2 tonnes of paper a year.
May 2019 - We offset all our carbon with Greenfleet Australia and now do that annually.
July 2020 - We launched Take It Back, an industry -wide initiative to reduce plastic.
One of the greatest powers we have is the ability to help our community. We love using our platform for purpose and supporting charities and organisations that need help and that align with our values and ethics.
We are a regular supporter of Where Pigs Fly Farm Sanctuary and have been for three years. Where Pigs Fly is an animal sanctuary in NSW and they rescue farm animals that need forever homes, like Bubbles the pig here. They currently have over 150 animals.
We also work with Greenfleet to offset carbon and regenerate land, Sea Shepherd Australia, Down Syndrome Australia and have worked with One Tree Planted (we planted 10,000 trees), Port Macquarie Koala Hospital and WIRES.
Our team are part of our community and we support and celebrate diversity. We have worked with Autism Spectrum Australia and celebrate all abilities in our F&F team.
We commit to bringing you products that are not only 100% vegan and cruelty-free but also ethically made. We dig deep into how products are made and if there are any grey areas we won't stock them. We look at parent companies and if they test on animals we won't range their brands even if they are subsidiaries of the parent company. We bring you innovative, different products that can help your life, health, and commitment to the environment.
Responsibility, and being a B Corp, doesn't stop at the environment or our products. We love our team and strive to create a collaborative, open and transparent workplace. If it doesn't feel like work we've done a good job! We also treat our suppliers with respect and regard them as partners on this journey. We're always transparent with them and believe in growing together. And of course, we love our industry and frequently talk at events, educate others and help other retailers.
We'd love more businesses to become B Corps so please find out more here.
