Going Green with Lisa Bronner

Dr Bronner's is a brand of certified organic soaps and other products that have been in production since 1948. Their products are beautiful, effective and have many uses. The Bronner family still owns and manages Dr Bronner's and are a wealth of knowledge.

Lisa Bronner is the granddaughter of Dr. Emanuel Bronner, founder of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps. Lisa is a mum and very passionate about living simply and healthily. She founded a blog “Going Green with a Bronner Mom”, www.lisabronner.com, in 2009 to help others make the transition to a healthier home and lifestyle. I was lucky enough to be able to spend a few hours with Lisa on her recent trip to Australia and I managed to garner a few hints and tips on changing your lifestyle and switching to organic, natural products. So what are Lisa’s top tips?

Take it one step at a time – Lisa recommends you change one thing a month e.g. your skincare or your washing powder. Don’t try and do everything at once and don’t try and start with tricky areas such as hair or deodorant. Those areas require a bit more focus so knock off the easy changes first.

Simplify! Lisa recommends using one product for your face and body. This saves time, money, space and wastage. Dr Bronner soaps have 18 uses in 1 soap so they are definitely worth having around the bathroom

Educate yourself. Read bottles, understand ingredients and learn what’s good and bad. A great website for information is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep website. It has lists of products and ingredients. It is however based out of the US so some of our local products might not feature. http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/.

Make it yourself. Lisa suggests having a go at making some of your own products eg make a simple body scrub out of coconut oil and sugar.

Coconut Oil. Lisa is a huge fan of coconut oil and loves using it as a makeup remover, hair mask, and overnight mask.

Watch out for sunscreen. This is really important as traditional sunscreen can be carcinogenic so Lisa recommends using mineral or zinc sunscreen. All of the sunscreens Flora & Fauna offers are zinc-based.

As always if you have any questions please do get in touch with us here at Flora & Fauna and we'll guide you through your new lifestyle.
