The Power of Coconut Oil

Jul 30, 2015by Julie - F&F

There's plenty of hype and noise about coconut oil and it's benefits. It is being touted as a superfood with the ability to help you lose weight amongst other things and is becoming very popular in skincare. Here are a few reasons we love it.

Hand and Body Moisturiser

Coconut Oil is a wonderful hand and body moisturiser. Studies have shown it can increase hydration in the skin and prevent water loss. It is solid at room temperature so you need to warm it up. ECO's Certified Organic Coconut Oil is one of our favourites and is perfect to keep by the kitchen sink or by your bed for late-night moisturising.

Make Up Remover

Coconut Oil is a very effective make up remover for even the toughest of mascara's. Place a little on a cotton ball or pad and sweep over your face. Then continue to cleanse your face as normal.

Hair Conditioner/ Treatment

Not designed to wash and go but perfect for night time. Put a dollop on your hair paying particular attention to the ends. Wrap in a bun and leave overnight. I'll often wear a shower cap to prevent oil getting all over the sheets. You'll wake up to beautiful nourished hair.

Body Scrub

We have a wonderful Coconut Oil Body Scrub by Eco Tan. This Salt Scrub is fantastic for your face and body and the coconut oil moisturises as you scrub. Or you can make your own by adding sugar or salt to some melted coconut oil. Hey presto a wonderful scrub. Remember again coconut oil is solid at room temperature so warm it up. With Eco Tan's Coconut Oil Body Scrub we suggest running the bottle (lid closed) under a warm shower to soften up the scrub inside.

Oil Pulling

Now, this is one technique you might not start with but read on. This is an oral therapy involving oil (coconut is a favourite) and dates back 3,000 years being a type of Ayurvedic medicine. It involves swishing a tablespoon of oil around your mouth for about 20 minutes then spitting it out.

Recent studies show that oil pulling helps gingivitis, plaque, and bad breath. The oil adheres to microorganisms and bacteria cells in the mouth hence drawing them out. This shouldn't be used on its own; it's an additional treatment to your normal dental routine but give it a go. Also, 20 minutes is a long time so start with 5 and work your way up.

We have Dr Tung's Oil for Oil Pulling and Black Chicken Remedies which are both great for oil pulling.
