Advanced Navigation’s new submersible drone, ‘Hydrus’, is opening up new frontiers in ocean exploration and conservation!

The Underwater Drone Revolution Is In Your Hands!

We’ve all seen drones flying high up in the air — recording stunning videos and collecting data. Some of you might even own a drone! What if we told you that the same concept can be applied underwater? That’s right!

Advanced Navigation — one of the world’s most ambitious innovators in AI robotics — have created the world’s first submersible drone that can be operated by anyone (like you or me!). This fully-autonomous, submersible drone could revolutionise undersea research by making data capture simple and accessible for everyone.

The drone, named ‘Hydrus’, is operational straight out of the box. This means you can explore the mysteries of the deep blue, with ease.

‘Hydrus’ Can Reach 3km Below Sea Level & Capture 4K Footage

Hydrus is incredibly impressive! The small, compact submersible drone can reach a depth of 3km, with an overall range of 9km. With a battery life of 3 hours, the AI-powered navigation system can capture beautiful, 4K footage.

It contains a DVL, USBL, INS, acoustic and optical modem, so it will carry out underwater missions autonomously! It also has the technology to avoid obstacles and collisions. Cool, right? The drone also has wireless charging and the ability to transfer data wirelessly, so there’s no opportunity for water to enter.

“We’ve developed Hydrus to ensure professional grade underwater imagery and data is accessible to everyone, enabling greater opportunities across the ocean" said Xavier Orr, CEO and co-founder of Advanced Navigation.

Making Undersea Exploration Accessible For Everyone!

We love that Hydrus opens up a world of opportunities for ocean exploration and conservation! Advanced Navigation created Hydrus to mimic the developments in the aerial drone industry, which means that anyone can collect high-resolution data to measure or monitor their underwater environment.

“We’ve seen a revolution take place in the aerial drone industry, 10-15 years ago, only qualified experts could fly drones. Today, drones are simple and reliable enough that anyone can use them,” Xavier Orr said.

“Looking at underwater technology, we want the same thing to happen. At the moment, underwater vehicles require specialist knowledge and training to be used effectively”.

Collecting Data To Restore Oceanic Health!

Currently, we’ve explored less than 5% of our oceans! We know that our oceans are in danger — but we only know this because marine scientists and experts have delved below sea level to analyse the decline.

Hydrus has the potential to discover how the impacts of climate change are affecting previously undiscovered areas of the ocean. Threats like CO2 absorption, reef bleaching, new diseases, coastal erosion, and the loss of sea life and biodiversity can be rapidly monitored — allowing the authorities to respond proactively when a new threat emerges.

“Having technology like Hydrus is one way of supporting our marine researchers and scientists to access cutting-edge technology which puts them at the forefront of tackling the greatest threats to our global ocean,” says Dr Tony Worby.

What do you think about Advanced Navigation’s new undersea drone technology? We can’t wait to see how ‘Hydrus’ will be used to further our understanding of ocean ecosystems and how to protect them.
