1% for the Planet Explained
1% for the Planet was set up in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies.
Realising their responsibility to protect our planet, they decided to give 1% of their sales back to the environment—whether or not they were profitable.
“The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.”
— Yvon Chouinard in his book “Let My People Go Surfng”
Businesses and individuals can become members and commit 1%. There are now over 3000 members globally.
Since their beginning, 1% for the Planet has certified more than $250 million in support to approved environmental nonprofits.
